Chronic pain is pain persisting for three months or more. The causes of chronic pain vary from nonspecific back pain to injuries to cancer. Regardless of the causes of chronic pain, the persisting pain may have likely impacted the individual’s psychological, social and occupational function. As a result of doing less or having to give up some of the things that were important and/or enjoyable such as one’s job, hobbies, sports or household chores, individuals with chronic pain are more likely to find themselves feeling more depressed, isolated, irritable or helpless. The ongoing pain can also add to these problems, making it harder to cope.
At GROWING SPACE, we offer a 10-session chronic pain management program, either in individual or group therapy format. Using a cognitive-behavioural approach, we aim to empower clients to regain greater control of their lives by providing strategies to manage the pain and prevention of flare ups, reframing ways in thinking about the pain, and addressing any psychological, social, occupational aspects that have been affected by the pain.
