Mindfulness is defined as paying attention, with intentional purpose, in the present moment, with a non-judgmental attitude. Mindfulness is a translated word originated from the eastern Buddhism term, Sati. Sati, is a pali word, which consists meanings of remembering, recollecting, retention, awareness, and inspection. In general, it means ‘not forgetting’, keeping in mind a particular object of focus.
Jon-Kabat Zinn, the pioneer who bridged the eastern Buddhist mindfulness practices into the western medicine in 1970s, has demonstrated the great benefits in helping patients with chronic pain and psoriasis with his Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program. Since then, various mindfulness programs have been developed and continues to contribute many benefits to the community. Mindfulness practice has been found to reduce stress, ruminations, boost working memory, improve focus, reduce emotional reactivity, increase cognitive flexibility, improve relationship satisfaction and increase immune functioning.
