Phobia is characterized by an extreme or irrational fear of an animal, object, place or situation. Individuals with phobia often reorganize their life around avoiding what they are afraid of. At times, just the thought of coming into contact with what they are extremely fearful of will lead to intense feelings of anxiety and panic attacks. Individuals with more debilitating phobia such as agoraphobia (fear of being in situations where escape might be difficult) may find it difficult to leave home and limit their daily activities thereby leading to severe anxiety and depression.
